When school libraries' budgets are cut, the first casualties are often magazines - even though they tie into and can be used across the curriculum. Magazines also are great motivators for reluctant readers.
Here are some ideas we have collected from librarians and teachers that may also help your school library get the funds needed to keep your subscriptions going.
Here are some ideas we have collected from librarians and teachers that may also help your school library get the funds needed to keep your subscriptions going.
- Ask a community business to donate a subscription to your school. Small businesses that employ students for after-school and summer hours, such as ice cream parlors, are a good place to start. Also contact Pizza Hut, McDonald's, etc. Local service organizations such as Lions Club, Rotary Club, and Kiwanis Club are also possible donors. Teachers can use this as a letter-writing assignment both to solicit a gift and explain why it's needed and to follow up and thank the donor.
- At an Open House Night or at parent / teacher conferences, have a donation box labeled "Keep our magazine subscriptions going - every dollar helps!"
- Parents often look for holiday and thank you gifts for teachers. If your school sends a newsletter or maintains a Web page, keep a wish list for each teacher or grade level.
- Older students or student / parent teams can babysit, do yard work, shovel snow, etc. and request that payment be in the form of a subscription to the library instead of spending money. Then, create a bulletin board to thank both the students and the donors.
- Ask school service orgainizations such as student government, Key Club, FBLA, etc. to donate a subscription. If each member contributes just one or two dollars, the goal is easily reached!
- Contact your PTA / PTO fundraising chair and brainstorm about fundraising projects for subscriptions, or including subscriptions as one of several goals.
- Hold a library fundraiser! This is also a great opportunity to get parents into the library. You may even find a few volunteers.
