SPANISH ARMADA
Drama on the high seas - that's the topic for CALLIOPE's May 2000 issue. Spain's King Philip earnestly believed the time was right for his troops and ships to take England. He had reworked the battle plans many times and, although not all his advisors agreed, he gave the orders for his fleet to sail north to the English Channel. England's Elizabeth was waiting. She, too, listened to advisors, and gave orders. The weather, poor ship design, and miscommunication soon had the Spanish ships floundering in English waters. Join us as we piece together the records left by those who survived the battle with the accounts of scholars and then take a look at what the ships themselves tell us about that fateful August of 1588.
