CELTS, ANCIENT
Celts - Celtic: two words that bring thoughts of people who inhabited the British Isles and Ireland centuries ago. But for this issue of CALLIOPE, we will travel back even further in time to the ancestors of the Celts to the north. First you'll visit Hochdorf and Hallstatt, where you'll "enter" a princely gravesite and learn the whos and whys of the burial and the people with whom he lived and associated. Then, we'll visit Bad Dürkheim and another princely grave, but this one shows evidence of a more developed and wealthier upper class. And, then there's the princess at Reinheim. You'll enjoy your visit with her. After this introduction, find out more about the magnificently crafted artifacts found at these sites. Still today, artists and designers copy the ancient Celtic styles and fashions. But, we'll let a one-act play introduce you to the people and their customs and lifestyles. Find out, too, when and why many Celts began moving east, west, and north. Learn what happened when they went south. Then read how Julius Caesar's determined advance into their territory led to a change in lifestyle. Join us for an exciting glimpse back in time to a period often overlooked in history books.
