MILL GIRLS
In this issue of COBBLESTONE, we delve into the history of the Lowell, Massachuestts, mills and the new opportunities and experiences mill life offered to young New England women. With the opening of the first mill in 1823, the role of women in the workplace and in society began to change. You can meet Sarah Bagley and Harriet Farley, two of the more famous mill girls. We have articles that describe why some girls enjoyed their work experience, while others found the work to be dangerous and began to organize protest groups. There is an activity to help understand how the value of the dollar has changed over the years, and we have included a crossword puzzle using some of the key terms from the issue.
