BACON'S REBELLION
One hundred year before the Revolutionary War, Nathaniel Bacon, a landowner on Virginia's frontier, rebelled against the colony's ruling class, which was personified in Governor Sir William Berkeley. This issue describes the personalities of these two men and traces the path of destruction caused by their ideological differences. Articles focus on: an overview of the major events of the rebellion, the role of sea captains in the outcome, the role of Baconite wives as spreaders of news, the impact of disease on the Virginia colony, and a description of how the Jamestown Colonial National Historical Park reenacts the burning of Jamestown each September.
