MARION, FRANCIS
This issue focuses on the life of South Carolinian patriot Francis Marion. He earned a reputation as an aggressive militia leader who relentlessly harassed the British in the South. He earned his nickname "the Swamp Fox" through his ability to attack and then quickly slip into the South Carolina swamps and avoid capture. While most people can connect places such as Lexington and Concord, Saratoga, and Valley Forge with the Revolutionary War, few people recognize Camden, King's Mountain, Cowpens, and Guilford Courthouse. Marion and other guerilla fighters ultimately helped turn the tide of the war in the South into an American victory.
