COMPROMISE OF 1850

In the decades before the Civil War, the United States was regularly dealing with the issue of slavery and the role of the federal government vs. states' rights. The Compromise of 1850 was an attempt to reconcile Northern and Southern interests. It offered more stringent Fugitive Slave Laws, it recommended that future territories who might want to join the Union have self-determination powers over whether to be a slave or free state, and it admitted California as a free state. Many of the greatest American statesmen of the day - Henry Clay, Daniel Webster, Stephen Douglas, John Calhoun - weighed in on the subject. This issue discusses all the subjects mentioned here and more.
