CIVIL WAR CAVALRY
In American history, the Civil War proved to be the proving ground for use of cavalry units. Although at first horse units were looked at skeptically, by the end of the war both the Union and Confederate armies grew to depend and rely on the cavalry units. In time, mounted units were used not just to distract the opposition but to engage them in battle. In this issue of COBBLESTONE, we look at the role of cavalry units in the Civil War. We focus on several key battles and we meet some of the talented leaders for both the South and North. There also are articles on the history (yesterday) and the legacy (today) of the U.S. Cavalry. And for horse lovers, we have included an article that describes how the distinguishing element of the cavalry - the horse - was selected, trained, and cared for.
