BLACKWELL, ELIZABETH: FIRST WOMAN DOCTOR

When Elizabeth Blackwell graduated from medical school in 1849, she was the first woman doctor ever to obtain a medical degree in the United States. This issue is devoted to her life - from her childhood in England, to her years in medical school, to her life after school and her attempts to establish a hospital for women run by women. We've also include articles that provide a historic look at the role of women in the medical field, a review of the different contributions a number of 19th-century women made to the medical profession, and a look at Blackwell's innovative work in educating about and improving sanitary conditions.
