INDIANS OF THE EARLY SOUTHEAST
Caddo, Yuchi, Seminole, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Calusa, Timucua. These are the names of just some of the tribes that inhabited the southeastern portion of the United States in the centuries before European settlers. We look at the early history of these diverse people, from their prehistory, to the mound building cultures, to how the arrival of the first Europeans in the early 16th century altered their lifestyles. We include articles that provide a closer look at the bigger groups, and some short biographical sketches of some of the important Southeast Indian leaders. There is an activity on how to carve a soapstone bird and an insightful interview with an archaeologist who gives us the "scoop" on digging for history. You can also read about the Green Corn Ceremony today and the role of clans in the Southeast Indian groups.
