HUTCHINSON, ANNE
She was a woman in a predominately man's world, born more than 400 years ago, but we remember her today for the strength of her convictions and belief in herself. In this issue, we look at the life of Anne Hutchinson, who might be considered a forerunner to the women's rights movement of the 1800s. Articles on Hutchinson's early life reveal her deep religious beliefs in a time when there was great religious turmoil in England. There are articles on her journey to the New World with her husband and large family, and the life they made in the Massachusetts Bay colony. A play brings to life the trial dialogue between Hutchinson and the angry Puritan leaders of the colony as they tried to convince Hutchinson to bend to their will or be cast out of their society. There also are articles on her banishment from the Massachusetts Bay colony and the impact her life and actions have had on American history.
