WRIGHT BROTHERS
One hundred years ago this month, the first sustained, controlled flight of a heavier-than-air craft took place. Sounds like a complicated way of saying "first flight," doesn't it? In fact, humankind spent centuries trying to figure out a way to fly. There was a great deal of trial and error, and big and small steps were made both before and after the Wright Brothers made their historic flight in North Carolina in 1903. This issue of COBBLESTONE looks at the role of the Wright Brothers and others from Leonardo da Vinci to Glenn Curtiss and Samuel Pierpont Langley in the United States's early aviation history. We also look at how the industry has grown in the last 100 years and the importance of the military in this growth.
