CIVIL WAR, NAVY

COBBLESTONE has done a number of issues devoted to famous battles and various generals in the Civil War. But this issue takes a broader approach, looking at the use of naval power by both the North and the South during the Civil War. Neither side had a strong navy in 1861, but by the end of the war in 1865, the United States had transformed its Navy from one of outdated wooden vessels into a technologically advanced force. There is an article on the some of naval leaders for each side and a descriptive article that offers a look at a day in the life of a sailor in the mid-1800s. There are general articles that offer overviews of the various naval tactics - river warfare, high sea raiding, and coastal blockades. There also is an article on the recent recovery of USS Monitor.
