MUCKRAKERS

At the turn of the 20th century, America saw the growth of large businesses and wealthy trusts while at the same time tried to absorb an increase in immigrants and people struggling to survive. Backed by some of the major newspapers and magazines of the day, journalists and reporters began to write well-researched and in-depth articles that gave an " inside scoop" and also often revealed corruption or scandal. The journalists became known as muckrakers. We devote the March issue to meeting some of the most famous muckrakers and learning about the works or issues that they exposed, which ranged from public sector service, to oil trust, to meatpacking plants. We also have an article about investigative journalism today and a game that takes you through the trials and tribulations of being an in-depth news reporter.
