FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR

In 1754, George Washington gained some valuable - and painful - military experience. He has the dubious distinction of being the leader of a group of men who fired the first shots in the French and Indian War. In the September 2005 issue, we explore this world war between France and Great Britain, the role of native allies and native enemies, and the impact it all had on the British Colonies. The victor in this war - Great Britain - won on an international level, but the price of victory would prove equally enormous, and destructive. For the American colonists, the war's outcome signaled the beginning of the end of a good relationship with the Mother Country and the start of a sense of independence.
