ROAD TO YORKTOWN
How did a small, ragtag group of rebels defeat England, a sprawling empire and world superpower? The answer rests at the final clash of the American Revolutionary War at Yorktown, Virginia. When British general Charles Cornwallis dug in his heels, General George Washington began a 10-day siege. Though the War of Independence didn't end for another two years, the siege at Yorktown marked the last gasp of the English army in America. We take a close look at this history-changing event, and remember the pivotal role played by our French allies, who provided much-needed soldiers, money, and supplies. Follow the events of 1781, which led to the creation of a new country, in the October 2006 issue.
