ART AND THE CIVIL WAR
Thanks to the work of many artists both in the thick of the Civil War and in the decades following it, we have a strong visual record of that pivotal event in American history. This issue explores both the artists and their various mediums -- from the realistic sketches made by the "special" artists who drew battle action on the spot, to the often dramatic canvases created by painters, to sculptors' larger-than-life memorials to the war's heroes. In this issue, the famous - Mathew Brady, Winslow Homer, and Augustus Saint-Gaudens - share the pages with the lesser known - Vinnie Ream, Leon Fremaux, and George S. Cook. Together, their work offers an interesting look at the Civil War through art.
