HOMESTEADING, EXODUSTERS
Meet some of the famous African Americans who settled in the West during the last half of the 19th century, such as Pap Singleton, Edwin P. McCabe, and O.T. Touisant. Visit two of the historic all-Black towns that were founded - Nicodemus, Kansas, and Dearfield, Colorado - and read about the homesteading life as seen through the eyes of a fictional young boy. Other articles will provide information about the Homestead Act of 1862 and set the stage for understanding why African Americans would choose to leave their homes to settle on unknown land.
