PEOPLE OF PAMPAS
More than 65 percent of Argentina's population lives in the region known as the Pampas. Most of the area consists of grassy plains where wild cattle once roamed. During the 1800s, men called gauchos tamed wild horses and rounded up cattle. Eventually the open areas were taken over by large ranches. Today, although some ranch workers dress as gauchos, the legendary figure is mostly a thing of the past. Learn about life on the Pampas today. Meet the people who call the area home and discover how the image of the gaucho is remembered and celebrated today.
