KALAHARI LIFE
Situated in southern Africa, the Kalahari Desert is home to both ancient peoples and modern industry, including diamond mining. Learn about the trance dance, the legend of the honeyguide bird, and other traditions of the San, descended from the first humans to inhabit this part of the continent. For centuries they were hunter-gatherers in this difficult environment, moving from place to place as water sources dried up. Today, however, those who remain are farmers. Developments of the last 50 years increasingly threaten their way of life, as conflicts with national governments over resources and land rights are on the rise. Tour the Tsodilo Hills, a mysterious and spiritual place with numerous ancient rock paintings, and the Okavango Delta, a maze of lagoons and palm islands offering shelter to a wide variety of birds and other wildlife. The San's "click" language, called !Kung, is also covered, with examples of !Kung words that students can practice. Learn how to make eggshell jewelry the San way, and cook up a batch of Kalahari hot sauce for your next barbecue.
