JORDAN
Located at the crossroads of the Middle East, Jordan and its people have played a significant role in the long and extensive history of the region. For centuries the land now known as Jordan was part of the Ottoman Empire. In the early part of the 20th century, the area fell under British control where it remained until 1946 when it achieved full independence and became the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. Jordan's first king was King Abdullah I. In 1999, his great-grandson became King Abdullah II. King Abdullah's stepmother, Queen Noor, was born and raised in the United States. An interview with this fascinating woman is included in this issue.
