ZIMBABWE
Zimbabwe is a landlocked country located in south-central Africa. Much of Zimbabwe's land is fertile and ideal for farming. Other natural resources, such as coal and gold are also abundant in Zimbabwe. But despite its apparent advantages, Zimbabwe, like many African countries, has had its share of troubles. Many of the country's problems can be traced back to its days as a British colony. A small white minority controlled nearly all of the country's resources and political power. After a long, difficult struggle, Zimbabwe achieved independence in 1980. But independence did not end its troubles. Setting up and maintaining a democracy is not an easy task. Many Zimbabweans wanted retribution for past injustices. Today, the country works toward creating a country in which all its citizens can thrive. Learn about the many challenges that lie ahead for Zimbabwe and its people including the fight against the AIDS epidemic, an unstable economy, and an education system that excludes many of Zimbabwe's children.
