EMERGING ASIA
This issue focuses on a region of the world that has seen many changes in the past 15 years. The countries of "Emerging Asia" - Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan - were once part of the Soviet Union. With the break-up of the Soviet Union in 1991, the way of life in these countries was altered considerably. The effects of these changes are still being felt today. Today, the people of Emerging Asia are attempting to reconnect to their roots, while trying to find solutions to economic, environmental, and social problems. Meet an Uzbeki farmer whose family lost their land when the Soviet Union took control. Today, with the help of an American university, this farmer and others are learning ways to improve farming methods. Learn about food in the region and read about the importance of horses to the people of this area.
