NUNAVUT
Explore the newly formed territory of Nunavut in this issue. Nunavut, which was once part of the Northwest Territories, officially joined the federation of Canada on April 1, 1999. The majority of people who live in Nunavut are Inuit. The Inuit have lived in the Arctic regions of Canada, Alaska, Siberia, and Greenland for thousands of years. They have developed ways to survive the harsh conditions of their home. In this issue, you will learn about the formation of Nunavut and what it means to the Inuit. You will also meet a group of students who celebrate spring with an annual school camping trip. Advances in technology have diminished many of the traditional Inuit ways, but one tradition that has maintained its importance is learning from Elders. You will visit one school that invites Elders into the classroom to teach students about the importance of traditions.
