TIBET
Journey 15,000 feet above sea level to a region called "the roof of the world: Tibet!" Life at 15,000 feet is unlike life anywhere else in the world. Over the centuries, Tibetans have adapted to the conditions. Until recently, the people of Tibet lived in relative isolation. That changed in 1949 when the Chinese took over the region. The takeover prompted the Dalai Lama, religious leader of Tibet, to go into exile. In this issue, you will discover what the Dalai Lama is doing to aid his followers still living in Tibet. You will learn about Dharamsala, India, where many Tibetans are living in exile. You will also read about many Tibetan traditions including New Year celebrations, prayer wheels, and sand sculptures called mandalas.
