MARITIME PROVINCES
Three eastern provinces make up the Maritimes of Canada - New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. The Atlantic Ocean has shaped the region's history, climate, and people. The area's first settlers, the Mi'kmaq, fished in the bountiful waters and cultivated the rich soil. Later European settlers arrived on the shores and brought with them their music, language, and culture. Today, the Maritimes are a popular vacation destination. People from other parts of Canada, the United States, and even as far away as Japan journey to the provinces. Many come to see the "Anne of Green Gables" house located on Prince Edward Island. Others visit the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic in Nova Scotia, which houses many artifacts from the ill-fated "Titanic". Crews from Nova Scotia were some of the first on the scene of the 1912 tragedy and many of the victims are buried in Halifax cemeteries. All of these issues and many more are included in this issue of FACES.
