COSTA RICA

Journey with FACES as we visit the Central American country of Costa Rica. Costa Rica is well known for its lush rainforests and beautiful beaches. But the country is also home to "Ticos" (Costa Ricans). Unlike many of its neighbors, Costa Rica is a democratic and peaceful country. In fact, it has had no army since 1949. In this issue, Tico life is described through the eyes of a child living in Tortuguero, a village surrounded by rainforests. Learn about school, work and play in this isolated community. Many people in Costa Rica work in the banana business. Bananas, coffee, and tourism are the leading industries. Protecting the environment is very important to many Ticos. About a quarter of Costa Rica's land is part of protected national parks. Read about the efforts being made to save the rainforests and learn about the Monteverde Cloud Rainforest, one of the most successful biological sanctuaries in the world.
