Intern Application GuidelinesCarus Publishing, a leading publisher of children's magazines and books, accepts interns on a rolling basis in the Peterborough, NH, office. Total time spent in the internship may vary, depending on credit requirements and students' wishes. Two types of internships are offered, editorial and maketing/publicity. Editorial: As a small company, we present an intern with the opportunity to experience the entire editorial process, from creation to the printed word. We also offer one-on-one work with professionals in the field (our editorial director and editorial staff) who are available to give advice and guidance. This opportunity would be ideal for someone interested in the fields of reporting, research, editorial, publishing, writing, communication, or mass media.
Tasks include:
Sit in on design and production meetings. Work with the in-house editors to complete monthly issues. Complete independent projects, as assigned by the editorial director Write and edit copy for the editorial web sites
Marketing/Publicity: This internship consists of a variety of marketing tasks designed to give the student a strong skill base with which to enter the job market. This internship will also enable the student to explore career options in the marketing field by allowing them to experience several different aspects of marketing and public relations. We focus much of our efforts on direct mail, maintaining an evolving Web presence, and initiating contact with potential customers, as well as developing new products and expanding brand recognition.
Tasks include:
Statistical analysis of campaigns and direct mail pieces Survey design, deployment, and analysis Issue / book submission for review PR work for new and existing titles Ad and direct mail piece proofreading Web site research and link campaigns
Skills required for both internships: - Fluency in the English language, including average to above-average writing skills
- Reasonably competent keyboarding skills
- Basic knowledge of computers, as used in an office environment
- Ability to interact with others in a positive manner, both inside and outside the company
- Willingness to dress and act in an appropriately professional manner as a representative of our company
- Attention to detail
- Promptness with attendance and delivery of work products
- Ability to take direction
- Willingness to generate and share ideas
