CHARLEMAGNE

In this issue, we set the clock back some 1,200 years to meet Charlemagne - one of Europe's greatest kings. We'll see him first as an 11-year-old prince on assignment to welcome the head of the Christian Church to his father's kingdom. We'll learn how, just some 14 or so years later, the spirited prince becomes a king who leads his soldiers to victory after victory, until treachery brings about defeat. Yet, the defeat becomes a legend that forms the basis of the French national epic - The Song of Roland. And, there's more - read of his great friendship with Pope Hadrian and of an elephant named Abul Abaz that was sent to him by the caliph of Baghdad. Another article tells of his family life, his personal habits, and even his last will - all according to Einhard, a biographer who was also one of his closest friends. As an added treat, we included an eight-page section about ancient arms and armor. Go behind the scenes with the curator of the Higgins Armory in Worcester, Massachusetts, for a unique look at the hows and whys of ancient weaponry and military outfits.
