1861: A Year in the Civil War
1861 was a momentous year. Congress debated the issue of slavery. The newly-elected President Lincoln tried to keep the Southern states from seceding from the Union, but by the time he gave his inaugural address in March,seven states had already seceded. Fort Sumter, in South Carolina, fell to the Confederates in April. It as a year that would see the beginning of the War Between the States, and soon military leaders, soldiers, spies, and nurses would find themselves going to battle.
