NUMBER NERDS
This issue takes a look at the nature of mathematics. You'll learn about knots, fractals, and computers that can simulate baseball. You'll read about important ways that math can be used on the job. You'll also meet the first place winner of the U.S. Math Olympiad. An exciting aspect of this Odyssey issue is that it presents a "colorful" mathematician who is not the stereotype "number nerd." The article on knot theory art presents an aspect of math that most students are not familiar with...it combines craftsmanship with abstract theory. This article presents math with visual rather than abstract concepts which students will not find anywhere else. It's thought provoking and unusual math information for kids! "Number Nuggets" presents math concepts in an imaginative way to interest students in observing the world around them with mathematical concepts that affect their daily lives. "Play Ball!" talks about popular children's sports and board games, and how math skills make you a better game player and sports manager.
