FACES' Thai Dye Contest

from our January 2012 issue

You probably know how to make a tie-dye shirt, but do you know how to make a Thai Dye plate? Unlike the wild, bright colors you might see on a tie-dye shirt, traditional Thai pottery is known for its shades of cool blue, soft gray, brown, green, and cream. Some of the more popular designs include flowers such as peonies, leaves, feathery patterns, and spirals. We want you to combine the brightness of tie-dye with the style of Thai pottery.

You Need:

  • several sheets of white paper
  • pencil
  • paper plates
  • colored markers, pencil, or crayons

Sketch a design on a piece of paper. First try coming up with an idea for a border. You might think about a repeating pattern of leaves, feathers, or abstract designs. Then draw a flower or other object in the middle. Transfer the design in pencil to a paper plate. Go over it with colored markers, pencils, or crayons. Remember, think bright!

Send your plate to:
