Michael E. Smith is an archeaologist and a professor at Arizona State University. He has spent many years in Mexico directing excavations of houses at Aztec provinvial sites. His fieldwork explores the daily lives of Aztec commoners and nobles. Dr. Smith has published seven books, including the popular textbook, The Aztecs ( 2nd edition, 2003, Blackwell Publishers.) His article from Scientific American, "Life in the Provinces of the Aztec Empire," has been reprinted in several books. Dr. Smith and his wife, archaeologist Cynthis Heath-Smith, enjoy Mexican food, music, and culture.
