The online services we provide to children are:

1. Online Activities: One-time-only question and answer forums, such as Ask a Scientist and Ask Calliope features. In these cases, we ask only for the child's email address to respond to his / her query and first name to post on the Web site along with the question and answer. An alias can be created to protect you or your child's privacy.
2. Contests: For contest entries, we request that the child's entry arrive with a signed statement by a teacher or guardian stating that the work is original. We also ask that the same guardian provide permission for us to contact the child regarding his / her contest entry and to acquire additional personal information as needed to process the submission. This information is not kept on file or released to other parties.
3. Publication: Opportunities, either through our print magazines or through our various Web sites, for our young readers to have their artwork, compositions, etc. posted on our site. As in the case of contest entries, we request that the child's entry arrive with a signed statement by a teacher or guardian stating that the work is original. We also ask that the same guardian provide permission for us to contact the child regarding his / her contest entry and to acquire additional personal information as needed to process the submission. This information is not kept on file or released to other parties.
4. Recommended Links: We do not take responsibility for any material featured on those sites, and we cannot guarantee the privacy of anyone using these other sites. Visitors leaving our site(s) do so at their own risk.

We may collect some information from a child age 13 and under without parental consent, but only in the following case: If a child sends a comment to our site, the editorial staff will keep the email address only long enough to respond to that specific question or comment. After responding to the child's email message, the email address will be purged.

We collect information volunteered by the visitor, such as survey responses, contest entries, and data for fulfilling orders or catalog requests. The information we collect is used to process orders and improve the experience of visitors to our Web site.

If you supply us with your telephone number online, you may receive telephone contact from us or an agent working on our behalf with regard to orders you have placed with us.
