Teacher's Guide for COBBLESTONE ® Elizabeth Blackwell: First Woman Doctor
March 2003
Prepared by: Mary Shea, Ph.D. Dr. Shea teaches undergraduate and graduate reading courses at Canisius College in Buffalo, NY.
The Elizabeth Blackwell Award is given by Hobart and William Smith College to a woman who has both achieved and used her talents to serve others. The person receiving the award must meet these qualifications because that is what Elizabeth Blackwell did in her life. Dr. Blackwell worked hard, against great obstacles, to become all that she could and wanted to be. Her concern about social justice led her to use her skills to help others.
As you read the articles write down information that appropriately completes this organizer. Record facts that show how Elizabeth Blackwell achieved. Write down facts that show how she helped others. As we discuss each article and the notes you've taken, we'll connect her achievements to the ways she used them to serve others. Also, note particular people who assisted her when she needed a helping hand.
