Class Discussion / Activities:
I. Read and discuss: "Angel of the Battlefield" (p. 2 - 6), "A Childhood That Shaped A Future" (p. 10 - 13), and "Finding Lost Soldiers" (p. 14 - 15). Keep a timeline of Clara Barton's life (on whiteboard or butcher paper).
  1. While reading the biographical articles listed above, ask each student to build either a list or a character web of Clara Barton's character traits (i.e. compassionate, kind, curious, etc.).
  2. Research the medicines and surgical techniques of the 1800s.
  3. Visit the Clara Barton National Historic WebSite at www.nps.gov/clba.
II. Read and discuss "The American Red Cross Today" (p. 17 - 20), "When Disaster Strikes" (p. 22 - 23), "Red Cross Helpers" (p. 26 - 27), and "Get Involved! Be A Volunteer" (p. 28 - 29).
  1. Ask a local Red Cross volunteer to talk to the class about his / her experiences.
  2. Ask the class to bring in newspaper and magazine articles about the Red Cross in action. Share these on a poster or bulletin board.
  3. Visit the ARC website at www.redcross.org. Investigate the ARC's current activities. Can the class do something to help?
III. Read and discuss "Fun Stuff: Make Your Own First-Aid Kit" (p. 24 - 25)
  1. How much would it cost to build a home first-aid Kit? Copy the list of suggested supplies on page 25 for students to take on a family shopping trip. Students are to find each item in the store and record the price. Compare lists.
IV. Don't forget the activities on page 21 ("Be Like Clara Barton") and pages 30 - 31 ("Crack the Code").
V. Write letters to APPLESEEDS about Clara Barton, the American Red Cross, and any volunteer activities individual students or the class participated in as a result of reading this issue. Send them to:
