An APPLESEEDS Treasure Hunt!To the teacher: Research tells us that learning takes place more effectively when the brain is prepared to receive and integrate new information. This previewing activity helps children make sense of what they will be reading, using visual engagement and prediction to set the stage.Materials Organization of Students: Students can work alone, in pairs, in groups, or any variation thereof. Basic Procedure I. Before reading the magazine: ask the class to go on a visual Treasure Hunt, in search of artwork, photos, captions, graphics, or maps included in the content. You, the teacher, will have surveyed the magazine and made a quick list to be written on the board, before the hunt begins. Here are some suggestions from which to choose: Fence - Apron - Plants - Coins - Curled paper - Toy - Container - Ladder - Lever - Wig - Animals - Metal - Brick - Portrait - Buttons - Tools - Thread - Windmill - Corn - Logs - Pond - Bowl - Brook - Alphabet II. Working with the class: - Individually, the students will note the pages on which the items are found, working within a set time limit. Try 5 minutes.
- Working together in pairs for the second step, the children can share and expand upon their findings, also timed.
- In groups of four or five, pupils discuss and record their predictions on how each item might relate to the topic of "Growing Up in Colonial Williamsburg." Allow more time for this step, as it involves more writing and connects more closely to future comprehension.
- During whole class discussion, the teacher records the pages and the group predictions on butcher paper, adding questions that the class may have. You have now prepared the students to enjoy and examine each article individually.
III. Revisiting, for closure: Go back to the class compilation as the items come up during or after reading the articles in the magazine. Check predictions, clarifying information and answering questions. |
