- Countries: Nepal, Tibet, Peru, Scotland, Kenya
- Mountain Ranges: Himalaya, Alps, Rocky Mountains, Appalachians, Andes, Virunga volcanic range (central Africa).
If possible, bring to the class photos, magazine articles, picture books.

Class project
Divide students into four groups. Assign each group a mountain zone to research (foothills, montane, subalpine forest, alpine tundra - see pages 16 and 17). Beginning with the information provided in the article and using other books / magazine articles, their own knowledge, and the internet, each group should design a poster and list all characteristics of their zone including areas of the world where such zones exist, describe and illustrate (or find pictures of) trees, flowers, animals which can be found there.
Questions
Ask students to volunteer any mountaineering experience they have had.
If they had their choice of any mountain to climb, which one would they choose, and why?
Why do they think many cultures hold mountains as sacred? Have them list some of the characteristics of sacred mountains.
Math
Students should complete the "Figure It Out" on page 19 after reading the article.
Writing
Read with the class the article by 13-year-old Daniel Byers on pages 20-23. Ask students to write down what Daniel's feelings are towards mountains. Then have them write their own short essay about "growing up in . . . "
