  3. What was the purpose of the Reconstruction, and how did it help Blacks in the South after the Civil War?
  4. What were Jim Crow laws, and how did these laws effect the Black population in the South after the Reconstruction ended in 1877?
  5. What was Thurgood Marshall's role with the NAACP's Legal Defense and Education Fund?
  6. Why is Brown vs. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas considered a landmark case in the Civil Rights Movement?
  7. What was the role of the NAACP Youth Council in the Civil Rights Movement?

  1. The Ku Klux Klan first appeared during the Reconstruction as a secret organization created to prevent Blacks and Republicans from voting. How has their philosophy changed since the Reconstruction?

  5. Since February is Black History Month, have students write a skit highlighting the achievements of W.E.B. DuBois, Thurgood Marshall, and Julian Bond, and their roles in making the NAACP what it is today.

  3. Contact your local branch of the NAACP and invite a speaker to talk to your class during Black History Month.

  5. February 12th, 2002, is the 93rd anniversary of the founding of the NAACP. Create a class birthday card and send it to your local branch.
