"The High Price of Unification" p. 8 - 13 - When the Berlin Wall came down, everyone celebrated. Who put it up and why? How did it work?
- Why are some from western Germany not pleased with the changes in the new Germany? Why are eastern Germans concerned?
"The End of the Little Stinker" p. 14 - 17 - Make a Plus - Minus chart to compare the good and bad features of the Trabant.
- Plan an ad campaign to encourage people to get rid of their Trabants. You may use speeches, songs, jingles, posters, etc.
"The Black Forest" p. 16 - 17 - Can you find out why it is called the "Black Forest"?
- What other damage has pollution caused around the world?
"Who is a German?" p. 18 - 25 - Why were so many people coming to Germany at the end of the 80s?
- On a map, find the different places from where the Aussiedler were coming.
- What problems did such a large number of immigrants cause?
"Berlin: Again Capital of Unified Germany" p. 22 - 25 - Imagine that when you woke up this morning you found that overnight a huge wall had been built down the middle of your city. You cannot cross to the other side. What problems would this cause for everyone?
- Compare the Berlin that Beryl saw on each of her visits in 1985, 1991, and 1999.
"Knowledge Up In Flames" p. 26 - 27 - Why did Hitler have so many books destroyed?
- What do you think it means - "Wherever books are burnt, men will eventually be burnt?"
"Guten Appetit!" p. 28 - 30 - Make up a day's menu for the meals you'd like to eat if you were in Germany. Use the lists of food mentioned in the story.
"Christmas Markets" p. 32 - 35 - Make a mural to show a Christmas market in the local square. Check out the pictures in this book for ideas for the buildings and people's clothes.
"The Brothers Grimm" p. 36 - 37 - Check the library to find a list of fairy tales the brothers wrote. Choose your favorite and make a diorama.
- Read one of their stories to someone younger than you.
"The Forest Cottage" p. 38 - 43 - Write a script for the story. Present it as a class play.
- What other fairy tales can you think of that have some of the same elements as this one?
