Teacher's Guide for FACES ® PampasApril 2000
Teacher Guide prepared by: our staff. Ask students to draw a map of Argentina and identify the countries that surround it. Using textbooks, the map on page 4 - 5, and other materials, ask them to identify the other main regions of Argentina and their climates. Have them research and draw the national flag. Using information they can find from The World Factbook 1999 or Destination Argentina, ask them to translate the information on percentages of land use, ethnic groups, and religions into pie charts.
Ask the class to compare the Pampas to the grass lands of the Great Plains. Why do they think people prefer to live in the Pampas vs. the highlands or mountain regions?
Compare the climate of the Pampas with that of your region. Compare the life styles and foods of the Pampas with your own. Identify plants (flowers and vegetables) that grow in your region that a) would and b) would not be suitable in the Pampas. Give reasons why.
Using The Earth Building Foundation Web site, have students research adobe building and where in the United States such structures exist.
To test retention, have students complete the crossword puzzle on page 35.
Ask for volunteers to perform the play on page 40 - 43. The role of Gaucho as narrator could be split among several students.
Music Read (in Spanish) and listen to the Argentine National Anthem.
If you have access to a cassette tape or video with tango music or dancing, introduce students to this dance. You can get some historical information on Argentine Tango at Notes on Argentine Tango. If you are lucky enough to live in an area where there is ballroom dancing, you might be able to invite a couple to do a show and tell!
Creative Writing Invite students to write an "Ode to the Gauchos" - send us your three best submissions, and we'll put them on our Web site!
