Teacher's Guide for FACES ® Iceland

<-->
May 2000

Teacher Guide prepared by: our staff.

Ask the class what they know about Iceland. What comes to their mind about the country just from hearing the name "Iceland"? Then, have them locate Iceland on the world map.

As the class reads the issue, encourage them to do further research using materials you may have found in the library, the Web site listed on page 47 (Antique Maps of Iceland), and another very rich site, the AITLC Guide to Iceland, where they can research climate, history, culture, language, maps, etc.

If your library subscribes to ODYSSEYTM, our science magazine, add the May issue Warming Up to Iceland to your resources. This issue also has its own teacher's guide which includes articles on geysers, glaciers, volcanic activity, geothermal energy, humans battling nature, Iceland's horses, and the gene hunters' interest in the Vikings' pure and homogeneous legacy. Single issues are $4.95, class sets of 20 or more copies are $4.50 each.

If by chance you have a cassette of Iceland's national anthem, play it. Or you can listen to it online at www.geocities.com/Area51/Cavern/1026/Anthem.htm. Note: You may want to double-check ahead of time to make sure your classroom computers have the proper software to play the anthem.

National Anthem Translation by Jakobina Johnson
'- Gu'° vors lands, '³ lands vors Gu'°!
V'©r lofum '¾itt heilaga, heilaga nafn!
'šr s'³lkerfum himnanna hn'½ta '¾'©r krans
'¾'nir herskarar t'manna safn.
Fyrir '¾'©r er einn dagur sem '¾'ºsund '¡r,
og '¾'ºsund '¡r dagur, ei meir.
eitt eil'f'°ar sm'¡bl'³m med titrandi t'¡r,
sem tilbi'°ur Gu'° sinn og deyr.
'slands '¾'ºsund '¡r, 'slands '¾'ºsund '¡r,
eitt eil'f'°ar sm'¡bl'³m med titrandi t'¡r,
f sem tilbi'°ur Gu'° sinn og deyr.
Our country's God! Our country's God!
We worship Thy name in its wonder sublime.
The suns of the heavens are set in thy crown
By thy legions, the ages of time!
With Thee is each day as a thousand years,
Each thousand of years, but a day.
Eternity's flow'r, with its homage of tears,
That reverently passes away.
Iceland's thousand years!
Eternity's flow'r, with its homage of tears,
That reverently passes away.

Using the articles on pages 6 and 25 and the language portion of the AITLC Guide to Iceland, have students practice pronouncing the alphabet and learn a few words or sentences. Have them write down their Icelandic names.

Ask students how they feel their lives would be affected if they only had four hours of daylight during the winter and almost continuous sun / daylight in the summer.

Have students, working individually or in small groups, identify the different terrains Iceland is made up of, its major natural resources, major exports, main religion. Instruct them to identify their source(s) of information. If Iceland is part of a study of Scandinavian countries in your class, have students identify the major differences / similarities among this group of countries.

Long-term project: Start your own classroom collection of stamps, by countries. Ask students, other teachers, parents, and people you know in the community to give you stamps from other countries.
