Teacher's Guide for FACES ® New Zealand

On the blackboard, chart what the students already know about New Zealand.

Find it on the Map
Using a large world map, have students locate New Zealand. Describe its location in relation to Australia, Southeast Asia, and the United States. Have students note that New Zealand consists of two main islands, one north of the other. Locate New Zealand's capital city, Wellington, and discuss why Wellington's location was well chosen.

Research / Art Project
Locate a book that shows typical Maori architecture. Sketch at least one of the ceremonial buildings. Make sure that you copy the designs with care. If possible, tell what each design represents.
