Teacher's Guide for FACES ® England

March 2001

Teacher's Guide prepared by: Ann Stalcup. Ann Stalcup is the author of many magazine articles; her seven nonfiction books were published in 1998. She has visited more than 100 countries and is a mentor, teacher, folk art collector, and writer.

Brainstorm students' prior knowledge of England. List these facts on the blackboard.

Find it on the Map
Use a wall map and the article "A Ramble Around England" to locate the areas mentioned by the author. Your journey starts with the county of Cornwall in the far southwest corner. Each paragraph describes a different area of England. Students could take it in turns to read the description of each area.

The following words are used in this issue. A few are already definted for you. Use a dictionary, or the context, to determine the meanings of others.

Brit-speak
Divid the class into pairs. Have each student use at least six of the British English words on page 29 to create a paragraph. Their partner can then translate it. The most creative paragraphs could be shared with the class.

Critical Thinking

  1. Explain what part Queen Elizabeth plays in ruling Great Britain.
  2. Why do you think the British selected Saint George as their patron saint?
  3. How do you think the British acquired all of their colonies in the 1600s?

Creative Writing
Imagine you are a student at a British school. Tell something about the kind sof subjects you are studying. How are they different from the subjects you study at your own school? If you decide that you don't want to attend a university, what other choices are open to you at age 16? What decisions do yu thinkyou would make about your future schooling?

  1. Why is Guy Fawkes Day celebrated on November 5th?
  2. What kinds of industry are found in England's Midlands?
  3. What was the purpose of Hadrian's Wall?
  4. What is London's "Squre Mile?"
  5. What is a Cockney?
  6. What are some of the historic places you might visit along the River Thames?
  7. Name some of England's most popular sports.
  8. What was the purpose of "time balls" and where were they used?
  9. What is the "Prime Meridian" and where is it?
  10. What area of England is rich in legends, folklore, superstitions, and Piskies?
  11. Why is American Sam Wanamaker important to today's Globe Theatre?

Research
Divide the class into four teams. Have each team research one of the following topics:

  • The Romans in Britain
  • The Legend of King Arthur
  • British sports
  • Popular English foods

Students should find facts in addition to those that are included in the magazine. They may possibly find different explanations for some of the events such as The Legend of King Arthur.

Art Project
Obtain a book of Coats of Arms from your school or public library. Locate your last name, or a name close to it. On a 9" x 12" white paper, copy your Coat of "Arms. Or you could create one of your own. Draw the shape of your Coat of Arms, divide it into four sections, then decorate each section with the following:

  1. your ancestry
  2. your ambitions for the future (teacher, scientist, sportsman, etc.)
  3. your favorite sports
  4. your hobbies / /interests
