"The Vatican Observatory" (p. 6 - 7) - Why was Pope Gregory XIII interested in astronomy?
- Why is there a continuing interest in astronomy in Vatican City?
- What is the "Pope Scope?"
"The Vatican: Two Thousand Years of History" (p. 8 - 13) - How did Constantine honor Peter? What happened to the site?
- Study the "Vatican City Timeline" on page 13. Research other important world developments that occurred around the same general times. How did these events affect Vatican City?
"Vatican City Today" (p. 14 - 17) Read the article. How does Vatican City compare to a major metropolitan center such as Los Angeles, Paris, or London? Make a chart comparing government services, main features, lifestyles, and daily life. "The Conclave: The Election of a New Pope" (p. 18 - 21) - Why did the Catholic Church decide to use a conclave to select a new Pope?
- What rituals accompany the conclave process? What happens when a pope dies? What happens when the conclave selects a new pope? How do you think these rituals may have grown from "real" life events?
- Has the Papal selection process changed over the centuries? How?
"The Vatican's Treasures" (p. 22 - 25) - Using online and library resources (including those listed on pages 46 - 47 of the magazine), find more pictures and stories about the treasures of the Vatican.
- Find out more about the sources of marble (for sculptures), how early paint was made, 21st-century restoration techniques, and how the Vatican protects its treasures.
- Read more about the life and work of Michelangelo. Ask students to write a short story or letter describing life as one of Michelangelo's assistants.
"Altar Servers at the Vatican" (p. 26 - 29) Ask each student to imagine they are working as a Vatican City altar server. Write a short letter home describing a typical day's work. "Soldiers of the Pope" (p. 32 - 35) - Using the library and Internet, research the history of military uniforms. Try to find a practical use for each part of the Swiss Guard's costume. Why did the Pope choose this design?
- Design a modern uniform for the Swiss Guard. What elements would stay the same, and what would change in your design? Explain.
"The City of the Dead" (p. 36 - 39) - Does the Vatican still employ sampietrini? Why? Using the library or Internet, research the duties of Vatican sampietrini (past and present).
- What evidence is there to support the theory that Saint Peter's body was buried in the grottoes of St. Peter's Basilica?
"Peter and the Great Catch" (p. 40 - 43) Ask a small group to perform "Peter and the Great Catch" as a reader's theater activity for the class. Don't forget the "Vatican City Crossword" on page 44 and "Think About It" on page 47!
