Teacher's Guide for FACES ® ArmeniaSeptember 1999
Teacher Guide prepared by: our staff. Ask students to determine the latitude and longitude of some of the places mentioned on the map on pages 4 and 5.
Using the information on page 4, have students draw a pie chart of the population mix of Armenia.
Download the State Department's Armenia Consular Information Sheet and ask students to make a list of what they would need to do to prepare for a stay in Armenia as an American tourist.
Ask students to scan newspapers or the internet for current news about Armenia (e.g. http://www.armeniaemb.org.main.html; http://www.soros.org/armenia.html).
Have students pinpoint on a world map the countries where they know genocide has taken place, both in the past and more recently (some examples: Ireland, Rwanda, Kosovo, Holocaust, Iraq, Bosnia, East Timor, Cambodia). Then, working in groups, ask them to research the causes, and come up with ideas that might prevent future occurrences. (Students will find some good university and other sites by searching "genocide" on the internet).
In 2001, Armenia celebrated its 1700th anniversary as the oldest Christian church in the world. Ask students to design a poster to commemorate the anniversary. Pilgrimages to holy places will be an integral part of this celebration. Students could plan a pilgrimage to the sacred place of their choice in the form of an invitation to family and friends to join the pilgrimage. This could include illustrations, photos, an itinerary, and the reason for the pilgrimage.
Language Arts Ask students to interpret the following Armenian proverbs in their own words: "A cut of the sword will heal, but not a cut of the tongue," and "he who runs after two hares will not catch one."
After reading the articles, ask students to complete the crossword puzzle on page 35.
Read or perform the play.
If possible, bring to the class some examples of Armenian religious and folk music.
