Teacher's Guide for FOOTSTEPS 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry

January 1999

Teacher Guide prepared by: our staff.

Class Activities:

1. Give a brief history of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry and the importance of the assault on Fort Wagner using articles "Glory Soldiers: The 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry" on page 8 and "Assault on Fort Wagner" on page 16.

2. Discuss the reason for having a flag bearer in an assault during the Civil War. Bring in the differences between methods of warfare at the time of the Civil War (cavalry and infantry following a leader) and present-day warfare, e.g. Desert Storm and Desert Fox (missiles, airplanes, computers, television coverage, and commanders leading from a distance).

3. Teacher should read aloud "Saving Old Glory - The Story of Sergeant William H. Carney" on page 26. Discuss the significance of the Congresssional Medal of Honor, especially for African Americans. Look at the picture and description of the medal on page 28.

4. Have students read aloud the article, "My Uncle, Sergeant Carney" by Carl Cruz. Discuss the feelings of Mr. Cruz about his uncle and how having such a famous relative may have affected his life and ambitions.

Extra reading: "The Spirit of the 54th Lives On" on pages 34-35.

If Time Allows:

  • Look up New Bedford, Massachusetts, and Charleston, North Carolina, on a map of the United States.
  • Do the activity "Your Turn to Save 'Old Glory'" on page 32.
  • Make up a word search or crossword puzzle using words terms found in the articles read.

Essay Questions:

  • What do you think made Sergeant Carney perform his act of bravery?
  • How did this act affect the outcome of the Civil War and the way African Americans felt about themselves and how other people felt about them?
  • What would you have done if you were Sergeant Carney?
