To achieve our national goal of all students becoming fluent and successful readers by the 4
th grade, they need to be exposed to a variety of quality material, using proven reading instruction strategies. Magazines are a good way to practice reading skills since they contain such a variety of materials that appeal to, and are decodable by, children at different ability levels.

free teacher's guide emphasizing reading instruction in phonemic awareness, alphabetic recognition, fluency, decoding and word recognition, and reading comprehension. The teacher's guides are developed by Dr. Mary E. Shea, director of the Graduate Literacy Program at Canisius College in Buffalo, NY.
