CALLIOPE's "Honor an Ancient Deity" Contest Winners!

Congratulations to CALLIOPE's two winners in the "Honor an Ancient Deity" contest, which ask readers to tell us how they would use a deity mentioned in CALLIOPE's July/August 2008 issue on "Zeus" to name a 21st-century product they invented. Below are the two winning entries:

1st place Winner: Hallie T., Seattle, Washington

My product is named after the goddess Artemis. The name of the product is The Artemitsain Deer and Wildlife Center, or the ADWC. The reason I picked Artemis is because she is my favorite goddess. Also, because she is the goddess of hunting, I thought that, in good contrast, it should be an animal protection center. Artemis is the goddess of the moon, so the logo is a moon.

2nd place Winner: Uttara C., Chesterfield, Missouri

In ancient Greek and Roman mythology, Apollo was the god of the sun. Today, in the 21st century, scientists are working hard to develop efficient methods of fuel conservation by using solar power as a source of alternative, renewable energy. It would be wonderful if scientists would invent a solar cell that traps sunlight and converts light energy into electric energy to drive cars and to light and heat homes. I would name such as contraption an Apollux, after Apollo, the radiant god of the sun, and lux, the Latin word for "light." In this age, the world desperately needs a natural, inexpensive, pollution-free source of energy. Whose energy would be better to use than Apollo's?
